Warsaw Uprising anniversary (2016)

The Pałacyk Michlera building (also known as Pałacyk Michla) was located at 40 Wolska Street and was the scene of fierce fighting between a group of young Polish resistance fighters from the Parasol battalion of the Armia Krajowa and the Dirlewanger brigade on 5th August 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising. 

The building's defenders were commanded by Janusz Brochwicz-Lewiński (code name "Gryf") and were able to repel repeated attacks by the Germans despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned, but had to abandon their positions when they were re-deployed to another location in Warsaw's Wola district. The Germans, who had suffered heavy casualties, later blew up Pałacyk Michlera after realising it was now empty.

One of the partisans - Józef Szczepański (code name "Ziutek") - wrote a song called "Pałacyk Michla" to commemorate the battle, which became very popular during the uprising. He was also the author of a famous poem titled "Czerwona Zaraza" ("Red Disease"), which was a bitter condemnation of the Soviet Union's role in ensuring that the uprising failed.

This was to be Janusz Brochwicz-Lewiński's final Warsaw Uprising anniversary - he died on 5th January 2017 at the age of 96....
