Karearea - New Zealand falcon - Falco novaeseelandiae

            I spotted my special friends, the female karearea that, with her mate, has made Zealandia her home, a few days ago and was delighted to see her back in her familiar pine grove above the Tui Terrace valley, prowling around on the ground! Ye gods, is she looking for a nest site already? This behaviour shouldn't be occuring until at least July! This falcon does, however, have a record of starting breeding early and for creating a New Zealand record by breeding and fledging two broods of chicks in one season. So, you have to ask, is this incredible nesting behaviour in April an attempt at a third breeding in one season, or an incredibly early start to the new season? Or was she just scoping the area and not really serious about nesting yet? Only the falcon knows.
