Kampnagel Hamburg 5390 - a photo on Flickriver

            Kampnagel, Hamburg. Located in the district of Winterhude, this is the largest independent production venue in Germany. Built in 1865 as a factory manufacturing cranes, it later became a munitions factory in the war (with enforced labour) and later a general engineering facility. In the early 1980s the Deutches Schauspielhaus were looking for alternative premises as their theatre was to be closed for two years for a renovation. The factory, under threat of demolition, was reprieved and converted into a large theatre space with several smaller studio theatres. After they moved out, the building was again expected to be demolished, but local support for the arts facility was strong and Kampnagel was formed. It now has six performance spaces, together with workshops and stores, and a separate cinema. In 2025 it will partially closed to allow major repairs and expansion, retaining as many historical elements as possible (it is now a protected structure), whilst modernising the facilities. Cultural activities include theatre and dance performances, concerts and exhibitions in the extensive foyers. There is a building within the building used by youth groups.
