Mt Erebus and McMurdo Sound - Antarctica

            McMurdo Sound next to Ross Island, shown here, has less than 10 percent of its shoreline ice-free. The Royal Society Range rises on Ross Island and dominating it is Mt Erebus (3794 m), seen to the left of the centre of the picture (that is tilted down on the left as the aircraft is making a turn). The peak to the right is the extinct volcano Mt Terror (3262 m). Two Antarctic scientific bases, Scott Base (New Zealand) and Mc Murdo Station (USA) (3 km apart from each other) can be seen on the lower right side of the picture just above the two large sheets of sea ice. They are enlarged in previous picture.
