Peregrina, Spicy Jatropha, Suriname - a photo on Flickriver

Peregrina is an evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy leaves and clusters of star shaped bright scarlet flowers. The plant has a rounded or narrow domed form and gets up to 15 ft tall with a spread of 10 ft or so, although in cultivation it is usually smaller. Peregrina often grows shrublike with several slender trunks, but it can be pruned to a single trunk. The leaves are extremely variable; they may be entire and elliptic or oval, or they may be fiddle shaped, or they may have three sharp pointed lobes. They are bronze when young and brownish on the undersides. The flowers are about 1 in across and borne in multi-flowered terminal clusters almost all year round. 'Compacta' is a smaller, more compact cultivar.
Peregrina is tolerant of a wide variety of soils as long as they are well drained. Blooms on the current year's growth so it can be pruned at any time of the year. It handles pruning well and can be kept to shrub size, trained to a tree form or used in espalier. Drought tolerant. Damaged by frost and is considered marginal.
Peregrina is a spectacular shrub in bloom most of the year. It makes a fine container plant on the patio or at poolside. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
Like many of the euphorbs, Jatropha contains a milky sap that can irritate sensitive skin. All parts of the plant are reported to be poisonous if ingested.

Peregrina is een groenblijvende struik of kleine boom met glanzende bladeren en trossen stervormige, helderrode bloemen. De plant heeft een ronde of smalle koepelvorm en wordt tot 15 ft lang met een spreiding van 10 ft of zo, hoewel hij in de teelt meestal kleiner is. Peregrina groeit vaak struikachtig met verschillende slanke stammen, maar kan worden gesnoeid tot een enkele stam. Jatropha é um gênero de plantas com flores spurge da família Spurge, Euphorbiaceae . O nome é derivado do grego com as palavras ἰατρός ( iatros ), significando "médico", e τροφή ( trophe ), significando "alimentação", daí o nome comum de porca. Outro nome também usado é pinhão manso. Este gênero contém cerca de 170 espécies de plantas suculentas , arbustos e árvores (alguns são de folha caduca , como Jatropha ). A maioria destas plantas são nativas das Américas , com 66 espécies encontradas no Velho Mundo. As plantas produzem separadamente as flores masculinas e femininas . Tal como acontece com muitos membros da família Euphorbiaceae, a Jatropha tem compostos que são altamente tóxicos. Espécies Jatropha têm sido tradicionalmente usadas para fazer cestos, bronzeamento e tingimento da produção. Na década de 2000, uma espécie da Jatropha, gerou interesse como materia-prima, para produzir óleo biodiesel em larga escala.

Jattropha es un genero de 170 especies y es nativa del continente americano. En el viejo continente se reporta como 66 de ellas. Tiene uso medicinal y últimamente hay plantaciones experimentales para producir biodiesel de sus semillas molidas. Prodúz flores todo el año y se llena de colibrís y abejas que hacen Su polinización. Los formatos de las hojas varían bastante y las flores tienen el formato de estrella. Es una planta altamente tóxica como todas en la familia de las Euphorbiaceae. Si la poda regularmente se puede mantenerla como un arbusto, del contrario crecerá como un pequeño árbol de hasta 20 a 30m.
