Flor de Erva-Cidreira, Flower of Lemon Balm, F Hills, Brazil

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), member of Lamiaceae family, is one of the important medicinal plant species. The plant is used in medicine, cosmetic and food industry. In this study lemon balm plants were grown in greenhouse. Hydrodistillation was used to isolate the essential oils and chemical analyses were performed by GC and GC-MS with three replications. The yield of the oils of leaves and stem were 0.36% and 0.014% respectively. Twenty components in leaf and 19 components in stem essential oils of lemon balm were identified. The major components of leaf essential oils were geranial (43.1%), neral (33.4%), pentadecanal (4.7%), geranyl acetate (2.9%) and [beta]-caryophyllene (2.4%). Similarly the major components of stem essential oils were geranial (34.9%), neral (23.5%), geranyl acetate (7.5%), hexadecanoic acid (4.3%), caryophyllene oxide (4.0%) and [beta]-caryophyllene (3.5%).

A erva-cidreira é uma planta herbácea e perene, de reconhecido valor como aromática e medicinal. Ela pertence à mesma família da hortelã e do manjericão e apresenta um típico perfume de limão nas folhas. Ela é bastante confundida com a erva-cidreira-de-folha (Lippia alba) e com o capim-cidró (Cymbopogon citratus), devido ao aroma semelhante e nomes populares em comum. Suas folhas são opostas, ovadas a rombóides, de margens crenadas e de cor verde clara. Os ramos são quadrangulares, ramificados e podem ser verdes ou avermelhados, mais eretos ou mais prostrados, de acordo com a cultivar. Ocorre ainda uma cultivar de folhas amarelas, a "All Gold" e uma variegada de amarelo, a "Variegata". Floresce na primavera e verão, despontando flores pequenas, delicadas, de cor amarelo clara a lilás. Os frutos que se seguem são do tipo aquênio, oblongos e pardacentos. A floração da erva-cidreira é muito atrativa para abelhas e borboletas.

El menta, limoncillo, la melisa ,hoja de limón,o toronjil (Melissa officinalis) es una hierba perenne de la familia de las lamiáceas, nativa del sur de Europa y de la región mediterránea. Apreciada por su fuerte aroma a limón, se utiliza en infusión como tranquilizante natural, y su aceite esencial se aprovecha en perfumería.
Las partes herbáceas poseen un intenso aroma a limón cuando se machacan, debido a su contenido en terpenos, citronella, citronelol, citral y geraniol. Se utilizan en aromaterapia.
Se le atribuyen propiedades antispasmódicas; se emplea en la reanimación de desmayados y como calmante natural. Se consume sobre todo en infusión ligera.​
En las palpitaciones de origen nervioso la melisa tiene la propiedad de tranquilizar el músculo cardiaco y restablecer el ritmo normal del corazón.
También se utiliza como repelente de mosquitos, sin afectar a mascotas, niños ni bebés. Además se usa como infusión para curar el dolor estomacal.
Se han encontrado propiedades antidepresivas, antioxidantes y ansiolíticas en sus compuestos. El toronjil o limoncillo es utilizado en algunos dentífricos, debido a sus propiedades antisépticas y aromáticas. En Argentina es uno de los "yuyos" (hierbas) con los que en muchas ocasiones se aromatiza el mate bebido con bombilla.
