Cuban Copernicia Palm (Yarey), one of the many types of Cuban Palm trees in Explore - April 7, 2019

            SN/NC: Copernicia Baileyana, Arecaceae Family

A solitary palm, although appearing in Groups, but never in bunches.  They are growing over a huge field of the sickle bush which is actually a plague in Cuba, very invasive. These palms grow 10 to 20 metres tall, with stems 40 (to 60) centimetres in diameter, and are sometimes swollen and irregular and even slightly curved. The fruit is black, 1.8 to 2.3 centimetres long, and 1.8 to 2 cm in diameter. Solitary, large, fan-leafed palm, stiff, deeply segmented leaves. Whitish smooth trunk to 2 feet thick, and leaves bright green. Overall height to 45 feet with up to 20-foot spread. These fans are glossy, or almost wax-like and can be even mixed up with carnaubas. 

Copernicia baileyana or yarey como nombre común, es una especie de palmera que es un endemismo del este y centro de Cuba.  Al igual que otros miembros de este género, C. baileyana es una palmera de abanico. Los árboles tienen entre 10 y 20 metros de altura con tallos de 40 (a 60) centímetros de diámetro y se hinchan a veces. El fruto es de color negro, de 1,8 a 2,3 centímetros de largo y 1,8 a 2 cm de diámetro.  
Las hojas se utilizan para tejer sombreros, cestas y otros artículos. También se utilizan para la paja.  Crescen aisladas aunque en grupos, pero siempre solitárias.  Tiene el tronco irregular y a veces "inchado".  Bastante comunes en el área central de Cuba.  Isto se explica la poesía y letras musicales como a tradicional "Yo soy un hombre sincero, de dónde crece la palma..." una estrofa de Guantanamera.

Esta é uma palmeira de troncos altos, irregulares, um pouco "inchados" e com folhas similares a das carnaubeiras, folhas em leque, brilhantes.  Elas crescen de forma individual, são solitárias mas aparecem em grupos.  Nunca em moitas.  Endêmica de Cuba, aí se utiliza as folhas para cobrir tetos (tipo palhoça em áreas turísticas) e também para fazer chapéus de abas largas.  Ela é bem vistosa e tem semelhança com a palmeira imperial (exceto as folhas), que é a planta (árvore) nacional de Cuba.
