Sunflower in all its splendor, El Salvador

The common sunflower, is a large annual forb of the genus Helianthus grown as a crop for its edible oil and edible fruits (sunflower seeds). This sunflower species is also used as bird food, as livestock forage (as a meal or a silage plant), and in some industrial applications. The plant was first domesticated in the Americas. Wild Helianthus annuus is a widely branched annual plant with many flower heads. The domestic sunflower, however, often possesses only a single large inflorescence (flower head) atop an unbranched stem. The name sunflower may derive from the flower's head's shape, which resembles the sun, or from the impression that the blooming plant appears to slowly turn its flower towards the sun as the latter moves across the sky on a daily basis.
Sunflower seeds were brought to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century, where, along with sunflower oil, they became a widespread cooking ingredient. Picture taken in the gardens of the Sheraton Presidente Hotel in San Salvador.
 
É caracterizada por possuir grandes inflorescências do tipo capítulo - com aproximadamente 30 cm de diâmetro - cujo caule pode atingir até 3 metros de altura e apresenta filotaxia do tipo oposta cruzada, notável por "olhar" para o Sol, comportamento vegetal conhecido como heliotropismo.
Os girassóis são plantas originárias da América do Norte cultivada pelos povos indígenas para alimentação, foram domesticadas por volta do ano 1000 a.C.. Francisco Pizarro encontrou diversos objetos incas e imagens moldadas em ouro que fazem referência aos girassóis como seu deus do Sol. O Girassol recebe esse nome porque sua flor acompanha a trajetória do sol, do nascente ao poente. Foto feita no Sheraton Hotel em San Salvador.
 
El nombre Girasol se refiere a que el capítulo floral gira según la posición del sol (heliotropismo). Otro nombre común mirasol es más preciso, ya que indica que es un heliotropismo/fototropismo positivo, o sea hacia la luz. Esta orientación variable se manifiesta cuando la planta todavía es joven; cuando madura, ya no gira y se queda en una posición fija hacía el levante.  Toma hecha en los jardines del Sheraton Presidente.
