Mockingbird HDR - a photo on Flickriver

Mockingbird HDR

            This Mockingbird hangs out hereabouts with two of his buddies. My guess is they are juvenille birds, probably nest-mates fledged together earlier this year.

They are surprisingly willing and able to run around on the ground, where they snag small insects, possibly ants. They also feed on small insects they find on the trunks and branches of eucalyptus trees. 

I don't know if Mockingbirds flycatch, but I can't recall ever seeing one do that. I do seem to recall seeing a Mockingbird leap from the ground to snag a passing moth. Other reports I've read indicate that the Mockingbird is not a skilled flycatcher, although apparently, they do try.

When not feeding, these three also seem to delight in displacing each other from their perches, but this individual held still long enough for me to get a good bracket. Only his tail twitched slighty during the 3 exposures, and this movement was fairly easily fixed
