Eglise St Fiacre de Guengat I - a photo on Flickriver

Guengat est une commune bretonne du Finistère, qui fait partie traditionnellement du Pays Glazik et est située à l'ouest de Quimper... Contrairement à ce que pourrait laisser supposer la traduction littérale du breton, Guengat (gwenn gad) ne signifie pas « lièvre blanc ». Guengat tirerait son nom du breton « gwenved » (bienheureux) et « kad » (combat).

L'église de Guengat, presque carrée, a un aspect vénérable avec ses nombreux pignons garnis de crossettes, son clocher chevauchant l'édifice en son milieu, la forme tassée et robuste de sa construction.
Comme presque toutes les églises, elle est orientée de l'est à l'ouest. Elle a comme titulaire saint Fiacre et comme second patron saint Jean-Baptiste. Saint Fiacre est un ermite qui a longtemps séjourné dans la forêt de Brie au VIIème siècle.

Elle remonte au XVe siècle. Elle est précédée par un petit calvaire du XVIe siècle. L'église a été remaniée aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Elle abrite des statues et des poutres et sablières sculptées, elles même notées à l'inventaire des MH.
En 1706, lors d'un orage, le clocher s'effondra, endommageant fortement le bas-côté sud. le clocher fut donc décapité de sa flèche. Il fallut attendre 1892 pour que celle ci soit reconstruite.
