Ghosts of Wars Past: The quick Battle of Memphis

            The Confederate city of Memphis yielded to U.S. armed forces like butter melts on grits. On June 6, 1862, the battle between U.S. and Confederate Navy ships took place in the section of the Mississippi River that skirts Memphis. It was just two days shy of a year from when Tennessee seceded from the Union. 

The former Confederate city was occupied for the remainder of the Civil War.

I have tried to recreate in this photo what was on my mind as I looked out on the mighty Mississippi River meandering past modern Memphis. Composited in the middle of my photo is an image nearly 150 years old from a Harper's Weekly sketch of the battle, which is on the Naval History and Heritage website. I saw that sketch before making this trip.
