This is a mural of famous scientist Albert Einstein, a German immigrant of Jewish ancestry, in Germantown, Louisville, Kentucky.

It is a beautiful and inspiring mural. But why this image and why here? It is understandable that a place called Germantown would invite a mural of the images of famous German Americans. But there are many very famous Americans with German ancestry whose image could appear here. Many. But it is Einstein who is painted.

That tells me there is a message here. I think it is related to the history of this place.

In August of 1855, there were riots in Louisville between protestant nativists and Catholic immigrants, Bloody Monday. These street fights were sparked by angry newspaper opinion pieces, written locally by George Prentice of the Louisville Journal of the Know Nothing movement. The national Know Nothing movement, which opposed the Democrats, was hostile to immigration and immigrants, but largely neutral on slavery. The Know Nothings felt that Catholic immigrants of largely German and Irish origin were a threat to America and its values. They circulated a conspiracy theory that the papacy wanted to flood America with Irish and Germans that would subjugate its national interests to the Pope. White protestant Louisvillians resented the Germans who settled in Germantown. These nativists did not want Germans and Irish to vote. Come Monday, election day, some surrounded the local voting places to prevent immigrants from voting. Others began to attack immigrants in the streets of Louisville. Immigrants were shot and some shot back. Twenty-two were killed, many were injured and over a hundred shops and homes were vandalized or burned down.
