California & Pleiades - a photo on Flickriver

            Wide field with the California Nebula (NGC 1499) and the Pleiades (M45).

The Pleiades, located in the constellation Taurus, are one of the nearest star clusters to Earth. The bluish nebulosity is a typical reflection nebula. This means the light of the of the B-type stars is reflected by a unrelated dust cloud in the interstellar medium through which the stars are currently passing.

The red California Nebula, located in the constellation Perseus, is an emission nebula. Its fluorescence is due to excitation of the Hβ line in the nebula by the nearby prodigiously energetic O7 star, xi Persei (Menkib - just right of the nebula).

The distance of the two nebulas in our night sky is about 12° which equals the angular extent of about 25 Full Moons. In between are hot stars of the Perseus OB2 association and dusty, dark nebulae along the edge of the nearby, massive Perseus molecular cloud.
