            *During the 1970's while traveling through the border towns, we met literally hundreds of street artists who painted portraits of Elvis Presley, John Wayne, Jesus Christ and Farah Fawset among others on stretched black velvet. Practically everyone heading for the bullfights and cockfights would buy them. Since they could be painted at lightening speed they sold for no more than $ 5.00. 
Intrigued by this "modern" art, did a little research and found out that this kind of art has been around for centuries originating in the Caucasus and painted by Russian priests. 

Deciding to try it out, I painted several, stapling them to frames, several of these have recently been found of which the above is one of them. Should there be enough interest in viewing them, will post them  for your enjoyment. 
p.s. Velvet paintings in the 70-80,s, were never accepted by galleries in U.S. on the contrary, they were looked down at and considered "Kitsch" /
