Wilson's phalarope, male - a photo on Flickriver

            Unlike most birds, the male phalarope tends its young alone, while the female abandons the nest after laying her clutch.  I never found  his nest (I suspect it was nearby), but he circled me several times calling out, before landing at the lake edge.
