Flume 27

            This is a re post of one the first photos I uploaded on Flickr. I did some additional adjustments in Lightroom. 

The Independence Trail, which is wheelchair accessible, starts at HWY 49 just before it crosses the South Yuba River.The trail is actually an old miners ditch called the Excelsior Canal. The canal was constructed from 1856 to 1859. The canal supplied water from the South Yuba River to Smartsville gold mines 27 miles away. The canal is mostly a rock lined dirt ditch dug out of the hillside except for wooden flumes that were built across ravines. Even though hydraulic mining was outlawed in California in 1884 the canal was used for irrigation until 1963.
