The Grand Staircase: Christ Church - a photo on Flickriver

            I posted this on flickr in 2012 & as it had only had about four faves I deleted it & posted it again in 2017 & it went on explore. So now it's lots of faves. It amuses me but also irritates me.

This spectacular staircase and ceiling took my breath away.

The Christ Church hall staircase was built in four stages over a period of 350 years. Cardinal Wolsey fell from power before the tower above it was completed, and his intentions for it's use are uncertain.
The base and fenestration are Wolsey's; the beautiful fan-vaulting the work of William Smith, was added circa 1658. The layout of the staircase was altered  by James Wyatt in 1801.

The college was founded in 1525 by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, who suppressed twenty two monasteries to acquire the funds for his lavish building project. Over the years numerous luminaries have been educated here, including Albert Einstein, philosopher John Locke, poet WH Auden, Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) and 13 British prime ministers.
