Burn Scar from the Soberanes Fire - a photo on Flickriver

            Our trip through the Ventana Wilderness took us in and out of areas burned by the 2016 Soberanes fire, but one segment in particular took us right through the heart of a burn scar, and it seemed we all became melancholy, in sad awe at the scope of devastation. A smattering of low scrub and manzanita is creeping in, but the pines -- and the mammals that used to live here - are either gone or remain as ghosts. Of course fire is part of a natural and healthy cycle for forests; what's different here is that fires are larger and hotter due to climate-change-induced drought. And of course it's impossible for a forest to recover in successive drought years. These forests aren't coming back for a very long time. Grateful to have witnessed the burn scar up close - it was moving.
