Stellar Whirlpool... Reflected! - a photo on Flickriver

When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade.  This past weekend in central Oregon was frustratingly clear and sunny, very poor conditions for landscapes.  But with the moon setting relatively early, it was perfect for night shots.

This is something I didn't think possible - stars reflected in a lake!  Believe it or not, the only editing done was colors/curves/contrast and removal of hot pixels.  With a maximum depth of 10 feet, Sparks is rather shallow and relatively calm, providing a good reflecting surface.  And being farther from any major population centers, it is dark.  This was a 30 minute single exposure.  I could have gone longer but I was operating on borrowed time.  Compare that to the 20 minutes I used last summer at Lost Lake, only 60 miles from Portland, where the sky was nearing burn-out.  And nobody came flying thru my frame halfway thru my long exposure!

Taken on an Exposure Northwest workshop with Aaron Reed and Zeb Andrews.  Lots of information to absorb in one weekend - what were those tips on noise reduction again???
