The temperate rainforests on the Olympic Peninsula are among the most stunning places I have ever been to in the United States. In India, I grew up very close to tropical rainforest, and the forests of the Olympic Peninsula has been the closest in appearance that I have found in the US. One of the places on my list during our visit to Washington was the stunning Sol Duc Falls. There is a short hike to get to the falls from the parking lot. I did not think too much about this short hike, but it would be an excellent photo opportunity. We encountered tiny streams and creeks along the way, as well as massive old-growth trees. It seemed like a slight drizzle was always on the cards, keeping the trees' foliage vividly green.

While we saw many massive trees on this trail, one of the items that caught my eye was this new sapling growing right under an enormous tree. I spent quite a bit of time here trying to come up with an exciting composition. I wanted to include both the seedling and tree in the frame and needed a bit of visual separation between the two. In these kinds of woodland settings, framing a photo is difficult due to all the chaos. I finally settled on a composition with the bigger tree right behind the smaller one and used the shallow depth of field and close focusing of my 24-70 lens to get the separation. I liked the outcome. Let me know what you think.
