There's Cougars in them there hills - a photo on Flickriver

            “There’s Cougars in them there hills”  A drone shot from Cypress Hills Saskatchewan, looking into Alberta.  About 20 years ago It was noticed that cougars were moving back into Cypress Hills.  They were once native but were killed off when the area was inhabited for ranching.  Now the Cypress Hills in Saskatchewan and Alberta has the highest known density of cougars anywhere in the world, 6.5-8.25 per 100km2.  1 every 4.6 square miles.  That is a lot of cougars!!  It is the most Eastern known range of a breeding population of the large cats in North America.  Male cougars have large territories, and in Cypress hills they overlap with many other males.  They are spreading out and have been found in Medicine Hat, Maple Creek and Kindersley… right in town. In some cases they have bedded under the decks of homes for multiple nights.  In the last few years incidents with pets are on the rise which is causing concern.  In one case a cougar took a woman’s dog as she was walking it on a leash in the middle of the day.  A biologist who has studied cougars once told me that you will only see a cougar if they want you to see them.
