Furnace Creek Formation / Death Valley

            The Furnace Creek Formation, a thick sequence of mudstone, siltstone and conglomerate, was deposited in an ancient lake during the Miocene Period, about 9 milion years ago. These soft sediments have eroded in the distinctive badlands manner. One of the great delights of photographing at Death Valley is the wonderful sublety of the colors. Zabriskie Point.
