            the sky
like a breath
caught
shivers thin whispers of sun

its mist light
sliding between
the shoulders of mountains
gnawed smooth
by the teeth of
ancient cold

this place
a cathedral
and a tomb
has no straight lines
only the curve of snowbanks
and ice floes

only the spirals of frost
etched on glass
that no hand
will ever unweave

here, life folds itself small
and waits
for the thaw
for the crash of rivers waking
for the breaking apart of ice and bone,
the triumphant sweep of wings
against a gentler air

but for now
listen to the wind,
how its song calls out
like a second sky

an aching bruise 
of lavender and lead
vast, white
and never ending
