Pig's Last Stand — Explored - a photo on Flickriver

The Pig Stand, where cook W. W. Cross invented the Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich and Texas Toast, sits ready for demolition. (Some say that one day the toaster broke, so he began toasting bread on the grill and the customers loved it.)

This was not the first Pig Stand — that one was in Dallas. That was the first drive-in restaurant, and where car hops and onion rings were invented. Nor was it the last — one in San Antonio stayed open a month or two longer.

But in its day, it was one of the hippest places on the planet to eat. And even until the end, it was still a real treasure — a 20th century icon.

Despite years of effort by various historical societies to save it, it was demolished to build a convenience store.

There just weren't enough convenience stores. After all, people can't live without scratch-offs and six-packs.

Pig Stand no. 41 was demolished in 2018.
