This is John- Suffolk Stranger Portrait No 90

            Introducing John. No sooner had I finished speaking to Paul #89 I bumped into John. He'd just arrived in town on his bike and was parking it in a bike bay near the Nutshell.  He'd seen me talking to Paul and told me he was also a regular at the Nutshell.

When I took this on a bright sunny day back in February pubs had been closed for many months and many were closing for good.

John told me that he just retired from work. He told me that he'd been a builder and a successful one as he now owned two houses that he rents out in Bury St Edmunds.

John is a Bury boy and he went to the same primary school that I attended at St Edmundsbury. John hated school.Neither he or the school had recognised his dyslexia. This affected his reading ability and he felt sometimes he was treated as being lazy or stupid. The 1960's were a time when some teachers would use a ruler across the hands or a flying blackboard rubber to control a class.

Although he wasn't an academic success he excelled in the building trade and John is now enjoying retirement.
