A Sunday in 1961 - Routemaster RM581 running as a trolleybus on route 609. Location Junction of Drayton Park and Holloway Road, bus heading south.

The ABC bakers have empty shelves and Bert’s Cafe is closed on a Sunday. The RM is surrounded by Fords and 2 young lads up on their pedals, on the bikes of them days to have, competing with the bus.

Highgate converted from trolleybuses to buses in Mar 1961, but having at this time provided trolleys on Sundays for route 609, RMs were used until Finchley also converted to buses in Nov 1961. Then, all the trolleys finished and the route became all RMs with a route number change to 104. Ref:- Ian Armstrong - Route 609.

The bus had an interesting and a rather colourful life, ending up being open roofed and retiring to Cyprus. The WLT581 number plate finished up on, yes, a Ford car. See more in this WLT581 search.
