Hook Canyon - a photo on Flickriver

Hook Canyon

            Hook Canyon is on the eastern shore of Bear Lake in Utah near the Idaho border, about 8 miles from where this photo was taken.  A few years ago it was almost the location of a huge environmental disaster.  An energy company had a scheme to build a dam on top of the hills to impound water from the lake.  The idea was to pump water up the hill during the night when electricity was cheap and store it in the impound pond.  Then when electricity was expensive and in high demand they would dump the water down the hill back into the lake, passing through turbines to generate electricity.  They would have actually used more electricity than they would have generated, but made a profit by selling it at peak times.  Dumping  the water back into Bear Lake would have destroyed the spawning areas of fish found nowhere else in the world and churned up enough silt to cloud the water of one of the clearest, bluest lakes anywhere.  Local opposition was unanimous and the scheme was stopped by denying pipeline access across state park land.  It was a close call for Bear Lake.
