LNER 60163 'Tornado' at Dawlish - a photo on Flickriver

Spewing some dark smoke as it ambles along the Dawlish Sea Wall is rebuilt London & North Eastern Railway 4-6-2 Peppercorn A1 Pacific Class number 60163 'Tornado'.

The original Peppercorn A1 Pacifics were amongst the last LNER designs to be built, and none of these engines were ever actually constructed under the LNER, with the first of the class entering service after the nationalisation that created British Railways in 1948.

The development of the A1's goes back to the original A1 Pacifics of 1922 that were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, these being rebuilt as A3 locomotives from 1928 onwards to improve performance, one of these locomotives being the legendary 4472 'Flying Scotsman'. Rebuilding of this class was carried out by Arthur Peppercorn's predecessor Edward Thompson, who designated the last few remaining original A1's, A10's, in preparation for his new fleet of A1 locomotives. The first engine to be rebuilt into the new A1 was in 1945, this being pioneer LNER Pacific 'Great Northern'. However, Thompson's plans were not followed through from that singular locomotive, and thus a newly designed and built A1 Class was designed instead based on similar principals.

Thompson was succeeded as Chief Engineer of the LNER by Arthur Peppercorn in 1946, and continued his predecessor's plans to build a new fleet of engines that could be built to haul the heaviest passenger trains at a steady 60 to 70mph on the level. Design was similar to previous engines, with a 3-cylinder arrangement, and a Double-Kylchap chimney. The order to have these locomotives produced was made in 1947 at Doncaster and Darlington Works, but construction wouldn't begin until after the nationalisation of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1948 to form British Railways.

The first engines entered service in around October 1948, and began working alongside their earlier Pacific brothers, including the A3's and A4's of Sir Nigel Gresley, as well as Peppercorn's other creation, the A2 Pacifics. These engines plied their trade on the North Eastern Region of British Railways between London King's Cross and the North East of England and Scotland, although some occasionally ventured to the Eastern Region and worked out of London Liverpool Street to Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich, this region also being former LNER locale.

In all, 49 locomotives were produced, these engines being numbered 60114 to 60162, and took names from Racehorses, Famous People, works by Sir Walter Scott, locations in Scotland and pre-grouping railway companies. However, in 1955 the Modernisation Plan was published by British Rail to do away with the steam locomotives in place of diesel and electric traction. The East Coast Mainline was chosen for use by the new fleet of 100mph Type 5 Deltic Class locomotives, which, upon their introduction in 1962, quickly did away with many of Gresley's, Thompson's and Peppercorn's iconic traction. 60144 'King's Courier' was the first A1 to be withdrawn in April 1963, and the last was 60118 'Archibald Sturrock' in October 1965. All of these engines were scrapped by the summer of 1966, a sad end to these magnificent machines.

However, these engines didn't slip into the night without anyone noticing, and in 1990 plans were put forward to create the 50th member of this legendary class when the original blueprints for the A1 were found in a skip at the National Railway Museum in York. After a fundraising campaign throughout the 1990's by the A1 Preservation Group, the money was eventually available to put together this final locomotive. Painstakingly, each individual piece was put together by hand, with boilers imported from East German steam locomotive manufacturers who had been building and maintaining locomotives behind the Iron Curtain till the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. All other components were meticulously crafted over a span of 19 years until in 2008, 60163 worked for the first time under her own steam. In 2009 she began work on mainline tours, and was named by HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Camilla as Tornado, in honour of the RAF Fighter Jet and the Squadrons that they served.

Since then she has been both the celebrity and the sinner. As one of the worlds newest steam locomotives she found her way onto the car show Top Gear where she raced a Jaguar and a Vincent Blackshadow Motorbike from London to Edinburgh with avid railway hater Jeremy Clarkson at the helm. Amongst enthusiasts she has received a mixed reception, with many not considering her a genuine steam locomotive and refusing to so much as take notice of her. But for me and the vast majority of others, I love this locomotive, to me it is one of my favorite engines.

Since being out-shopped in fictitious LNER Apple Green, the locomotive's livery changed to British Railways Brunswick Green in 2011, and the short lived BR Express Blue that was worn in the early 1950's, though was quickly removed due to bad wearing and due to protests by the former Great Western Railway management of the Western Region. It has now returned to Apple Green for the 2015 season.

Long may this beauty continue to serve the railways as one of the most fantastic steam locomotives of our time, and of course we must also thank the men and women who devoted so much time and effort into creating such a magnificent machine!
