Nine times is a charm. Yes, I have been skunked eight out of nine times in capturing the low fog at sunrise this summer. I guess fall is a much better time to capture this phenomenon. I read the NOAA weather discussion late last night, and I saw some new descriptions in the report that was heavily hinting, "Tomorrow's sunrise at the Golden Gate Bridge is going to be epic!" So I set my alarm for 4 a.m., and drove up to the city. All the signs were different this time driving up Highway 280: no fog spilling over the top of Highway 92, no fog over the airport, and while driving through Pacifica, I could see how compressed the fog was around Sutro Tower; it was in the clear. I called my friend, Rob, and rousted him out of bed saying, "It's on! Get out of bed, and meet me on Slacker hill." As I approached the GGB it was obscured by a thick blanket of fog. I looked up as I drove under the towers, and couldn't see the top; that's a good sign. Then, at the end of the bridge, I was greeted with clear starry skies. I knew I finally got what I have been waiting for.
I hiked to the top of Slacker Hill, and was greeted by two other photographers, Mark Lilly, and Steve Hornstra. I set up my gear next to them for a few minutes, and then decided to walk a little further over. While I was shooting the GGB in the glorious fog, I turned my head in the opposite direction, and captured this shot. The moon was still high in the sky, and illuminated the top of the fog bank. You can see other photographers driving up Hawk Hill to capture this morning's event. I have a lot of images, and I'll post more in the next few days.
