The famous view into the Måbø valley with Vøringsfossen on the left… The wooden suspension bridge from my first upload can be seen down in the valley, in the middle of the frame, if you look closely. Nicest against black... (press L).

The weather forecast said that the sun should show itself during sunset… but it didn’t… I already started taking long exposures to see if that would give me more color and usable lines in the moving cloud formations. But then… the sky opened up in the end. :-) I removed my filter and enjoyed the show.

The waterfall is powerful and falling in a relatively narrow valley. This caused the smaller waterfall across to be blown upward most of the time. Together with the massive sprays of Vøringsfossen it created continuously upwards moving moisture turning into clouds at the top of the valley walls, a fascinating sight. In the afternoon the tops disappeared quite often due to this, but in the evening the valley opened up.
The Vøringsfossen waterfall was hardly known by anyone other than locals until 1821. After its discovery, the height of the waterfall was estimated to be about 280 meters by throwing stones down from the edge and measuring the time they took to fall with a pocket watch. In 1893 the height was measured with a string, and the real height was revealed to be 163 meters. I don’t know if this says something about the old pocket watches, or the calculation capabilities of the people involved. ;-) Note that some human made objects were removed from this scene, to make it seem like 1821 once more (with more vegetation and higher trees that is) when only a very long walk (maybe on a horse if you had one) would bring you to this view. Must still have been worth it.
