Red, white & bygone - a photo on Flickriver

            Well, this patriotic implement is certainly a colorful, red, white and blue. It is a horse-drawn hay rake. It is currently bogged down in a field, never to be used again. At his dairy, farmer McIntosh would have grown grass hay, mowed and baled the harvest for winter feeding. As Dr. William Davis says, cows have four stomachs, a cud and are really good at eating the stuff; let them do the first part of the work. 

This horse-drawn hay rake drew the hay into neat rows after the field was mowed. After, a baler would follow along the rows, depositing the bales on the ground until a bale wagon collected them for storage. Was haying more manually intensive at McIntosh. It stands in the field of grass in front of the Dickens Barn. Days of duty are probably bygone. I'd like to see some of the horse-drawn gear in operation at the agricultural museum. The Dickens barn was moved here from the Dickens farm that became Longmont's FAA. I wanted to catch more of the spirit of the McIntosh/Lohr Museum. 

I gained new interest in the Dickens branch of the family when I did some research and found William H. was the grandson of Charles Dickens, English author. I have still been unable to link him to his first cousin's son, Leroy Parker, who was also in Colorado's northwest in the day. A few know Parker by his stage name, changed to protect the innocent in the family. 

This field don't look too stinkin' good. I see the field needs some serious work. A family of words came from the Latin root - man. Words that meant to work with the hands... you know manufacture and manure... especially smelly hands.  

The first crop was usually to grow alfalfa to invest it with nitrogen. The first farm crop ought to be growing champeen soil. It's a can of cake after that. Everything goes into a chipper-shredder, including cottonseed meal, alfalfa, shredded tree limbs, autumn leaves, grass clippings and kitchen leftovers. Pretty soon the soil is primo and will grow anything. 

The Ag Museum is still open for first Saturdays through the winter. I have some nice snow job shots last winter in the album. I accessed the only snow Saturday last winter. As always, it's a great spot for exercise and access to Mac Lake. There is always something more at McIntosh but I won't search today. I apparently can't find everything in a single pass. I like the natural patina of the rusting tones as they were. There is great diversity in those tones.
