Zapato de La Reina

            Zapato de La Reina (The Queen's Shoe) is a natural arch in Teide National Park on the Spanish island of Tenerife, just off the north west coast of Africa. Teide National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site centred around the Teide-Pico Viejo stratovolcano that, at 3718 metres, is the highest peak in all of Spain. Rising 7500 metres above the ocean floor, it's regarded as the world's third-tallest volcanic structure. Teide is an active volcano and its most recent eruption occurred in late 1909.

At 2050 metres, the Zapato de La Reina is above the cloud layer that surrounds the volcano for much of the time and, with its relatively dark skies, it's an ideal location for astrophotography. In fact, only a few minutes drive away from here is the Teide Observatory, which became one of the first major international observatories, attracting telescopes from different countries around the world because of the good astronomical seeing conditions. In addition, at 28 degrees latitude, the position is much closer to the equator than my home latitude of 53 degrees and this means that the Milky Way appears higher in the night sky.
