The Santana at Pier 19 - a photo on Flickriver

            Pier 19 is the dock for Galveston's  Mosquito Fleet.  This area was home to the 1838 Koons Warf, one of the first significant investments at the Port of Galveston and one of the first docks with deep water access. Before Galveston's first bridge connected the island to the mainland in 1860, the area around the mosquito fleet became the city's open market. Boats would arrive from the mainland, bringing produce, beef, and other goods to barter.  Jean Lafitte's pirate ships and the Republic of Texas Navy  sailed here.   As part of the Union blockade of the Texas coast, a squadron of eight Union ships sailed into Galveston harbor and demanded the surrender of the most important Texas port.  After a brief exchange of cannon shot, Confederate troops retreated to the mainland and Union troops occupied Kuhn's Wharf and patrolled the town.  The Confederacy retook the Island during what is now known as the Battle of Galveston.  Today's mosquito fleet ties together the early market, the Battle of Galveston and Koons Wharf.   If you've ever eaten shrimp in Galveston, chances are high they came from one of these boats. Katie's Seafood House in the background couldn't be any closer to the source.
