Silk Buttons and Spangles! [Explored!]

            Silk Button and Spangle Galls! 

Silk Button galls are caused by the asexual generation of the Silk Button Gall Wasp Neuroterus numismalis. Each button contains a single wasp larva. They can be seen on the leaves from August to October, until the leaves fall in autumn. The wasp larva will mature in August but remain in the gall on the ground throughout the winter, emerging the following year from February to April. 

Spangle Galls are caused by the common spangle gall wasp, Neuropterus quercusbaccarum. Common and widespread, a single leaf can host up to 100 galls, each containing a single larva. The galls fall to the ground and can be seen around oak trees during autumn. The larvae continue to develop through the winter, and emerge as adults in April.
