Petrified shark tooth - a photo on Flickriver

Here are some teeth I had the enjoyment to dig for a few days ago; it sure was a great day!

These teeth are estimated to 15-15.9 million years old. During this time the sea levels were much higher, and the entire central valley of California was an inland sea. The area northeast of Bakersfield is known for having the highest density of fish, marine mammal, and shark fossils of anyplace on the earth! In 2009 paleontologists from the university of Berkeley concluded that the high concentration was due to high currents that, for an estimated 700,00 years swept away sediment, resulting in dead animals to cover the ocean floor without being covered up. Once the currents changed the animals parts became covered up once again with sediment.

This paper answered the long held question of how did this amazing 50 square mile, 10 mile long area of fossils come to exist. The scientists realized that they could rule out a catastrophic volcanic event, because many of the fossils appeared to have rotted, meaning that they didn't die instantly. Another popular hypothesis that was debunked was that the area could have been a hunting ground of the humongous megalodon shark, but few fossils had any feeding damage. 

This sure was an amazing place to visit, and I already cannot wait to go back!
