Il castello di Belagaio - The castle of Belagaio

            Castello di Belagaio - Roccastrada, Grosseto Tuscany

Situato al centro della Riserva Naturale della Val di Farma, il castello di Belagaio porta questo nome probabilmente derivante da "Pelagus", un acquitrinio che esisteva nella vallata di fronte al castello.
Fu possesso di varie potenti famiglie dell'alto medioevo, come gli Aldobrandeschi e gli Ardengheschi; già citato in alcuni documenti del 1187, passò sotto il controllo di Siena ed andò lentamente declinando già dal Trecento, come attestano alcune inadempienze nel pagamento delle tasse.
Per questo fatto Siena ridusse a contado il castello annullando i diritti giurisdizionali connessi al suo controllo. Il castello dovette comunque rappresentare un notevole punto strategico a dominio della Val di Farma e forse la sua impor-tanza è stata legata anche alla presenza delle ferriere (stabilimenti di lavorazione del minerale di ferro), numerose lungo la valle.
Fu trasformato più tardi in una villa fattoria subendo, tra l'800 ed il '900, grosse trasformazioni che lo hanno portato all'aspetto attuale.

Located in the center of the Val di Farma Natural Reserve, the castle of Belagaio bears this name probably deriving from "Pelagus", a marsh that existed in the valley in front of the castle.
It was owned by various powerful families of the early Middle Ages, such as the Aldobrandeschi and the Ardengheschi; already mentioned in some documents in 1187, it passed under the control of Siena and was slowly declining already from the fourteenth century, as evidenced by some defaults in the payment of taxes.
For this fact, Siena reduced the castle to a peasant property, annulling the jurisdictional rights connected to its control. However, the castle must have represented a notable strategic point dominating the Val di Farma and perhaps its importance was also linked to the presence of the ironworks (iron ore processing plants), numerous along the valley.
It was later transformed into a farm villa undergoing major transformations between the 19th and 20th centuries that led to its current appearance.
