Amber is called " pöshel " (amber: སྤོས་ཤེལ (spos shel)) by the Tibetans which means the secret wax.
Amber is one of the most popular gem stones used in Tibetan jewelry pieces.
Amber is a light, ancient petrified pine tree resin. It had been worn as jewelry and burned as incense by Tibetan and Native Americans, for both social and sacred use. Amber diskette coins were also traded as currency by the Vikings.
In Tibetan Buddhism, Amber has been treasured since time immemorial. The golden color is associated with the Buddha Ratnasambhava.
Authentic Amber. will float in salt or ocean water. Amber can also be tested by burning, plastic will have a marked synthetic scent, and amber will burn black and smell organic and sweet as it is a light petrified resin.
Amber (succinite) is the direct result of fossilization through a natural polymerization of coniferous pine-tree resin that was preserved within sedimentary material, then redeposited through erosion. Around 45 million years ago, "amber-giving" pine trees (Pinus succinifera) deposited resin into the soil of what is now Scandinavia and the Baltic area of Poland and Russia. The oldest known amber dates back to the Upper Carboniferous period approximately 345 million years ago, while the oldest known amber containing insects dates back to the Lower Cretaceous period, approximately 146 million years ago.
