Just before the sh*t hit the fan here and we all got locked inside, I had bought my wife some tulips.  Tonight they were finished.  But before they found their way to the bin, I thought that they might be good for one more thing.  

First, I wanted to set the mood... dark.  I used Custom Menu setting E1 to activate the FP (High Speed) sync.  This allowed me to use any shutter speed... 1/640th in this case... and still sync the flash.  It does rob the speed light of it's potential output, but with two SB-5000s filling a 24" soft box less than one foot from the subject, I had plenty of power for this.  1/640th effectively turned my brightly lit dining room table into a deep dark pit... a black hole.  Into the hole, I added light.  Only the light I added was recorded.  So, setting the mood the way I felt appropriate for these once vibrant and thriving... but now dead... flowers.

Next, I needed to rob the nearly dead flowers of their still too bright and cheery color.  Rather than waste time in post, I used the Picture Control options of the Z50.  Choosing Sepia (C13... default settings) seemed to give me the look I was after for the project.  

I tossed a piece of burlap on the table as background and the mood was set.
