General Grant Tree

            The General Grant is one of the largest giant sequoias in terms of mass, second only to the General Sherman Tree. The National Park Service says, "The General Grant Tree is the second largest at 46,608 cubic feet (1,320 cubic meters)." The coastal redwoods can exceed the giant sequoias in height, but the giant sequoias are the most massive living things on earth.

Located in the Grant Grove section of Kings Canyon National Park, this magnificent giant is labeled "The Nation's Christmas Tree." At 268 feet, the Grant is only 7 feet shy of the Sherman in height, but has a larger circumference at the base. The trail to the General Grant Tree is relatively easy from a spur off of the main road into Kings Canyon. Along the trail are other big trees and historical points of interest. I saw deer browsing near the trail.
