Sundae Mountain: A Natural Hot Fudge Dessert

            When I got to the base of the mountain (see yesterday's photo), I still could not see much. I walked up a dry gully to launch the drone. When the vistas started showing up on my screen, I said Wow! This looks delicious!

As unusual as it looks photographically, it is just as interesting geologically. I've seen a lot of Chinle mudstone but this is some of the most vividly colorful I have yet found. Apparently a volcano worked its vent up through this bed of pre-existing Chinle formations without distorting them, and then poured lava all over the top. It gives the appearance of hot fudge poured over Neapolitan ice cream.

This volcano, about a mile in diameter, has a name on maps and is on public land, but I would rather not divulge its location publicly because one has to cross private ranch land to reach it. I obtained the owner's permission, but sensed he would not appreciate hordes of visitors trying to get past his padlocked makeshift gate. He said I could walk out there but not drive, so it took me a 7.4-mile round trip hike to get out here and back, even though the map shows dirt roads getting fairly close to the mountain. I also had to buy a $16 permit from the Arizona Public Lands Trust, good for one year.

The only image I could find of this volcano on the internet was a blurry discolored photo shot from a jet airliner window. So this may be a first detailed look at what I will call "Sundae Mountain."
