911 - a photo on Flickriver

            On this 9/11 anniversary, I have a new 911 story—not as catastrophic in terms of human lives lost, but terrifying in the extent of damage. Last Saturday we were up in the mountains under blue skies when a huge smoke plume rose high into the sky to the west. We found a high point with cell service. This is my nephew calling 911 to find out what we should do. They advised us to hike out and drive out, which we were able to do successfully... a hurried hike 4.3 miles out, most of it with packs.

We were a bit like the lucky ones on 9/11/2001 who made it out of Manhattan safely. The fire that began suddenly 5 days ago eventually reached over 350,000 acres. While loss of life has been minimal, many in the towns of Big Creek and Shaver Lake lost everything.
