As Far as the Eye Can See - a photo on Flickriver

            Montana may officially be "Big Sky Country", but most of the Great Plains provide unfettered views as far as the eye can see.

The Painted Canyon Overlook along Interstate 94 in North Dakota entreats visitors to a view of the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.  If the curvature of the earth allowed, one could see all the way to the mining town of Williston, 85 miles to the North.  As someone who has lived in cities and suburbia along the coasts of this country and around the world, it's amazing to see such a broad expense of land and sky - in some places a 360° horizon at the limit of the human eye's focal distance.

The media has taken to referring to this country as "fly-over" country, because with lower airfares, most people tend to fly from coast to coast rather than take the long drives that people did in the middle 20th century, but I think you would do well to take the time and visit this part of America, because it has plenty to offer...and despite the sign, here, a real sense of stability abounds.
