MAIN FACADE OF SIGÜENZA TOWN HALL, Explore! ⭐ April 26, 2025

            It is Renaissance-style and forms part of Sigüenza's Plaza Mayor (Main Square). It houses some of the municipal services.

The site of the ancient Segontia (that means "dominating over the valley") of the Celtiberian Arevaci, now called Villavieja ('old town'), is half a league distant from the present Sigüenza.

The Roman historian Livy mentions the town in his discussion of the wars of Cato the Elder with the Celtiberians.

The city fell under Roman, Visigothic, Moorish and Castilian rule.

Around 1123 it was taken by Bernard of Agen, its first bishop.

Sigüenza played a large part in the civil wars of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

The fortress palace of the bishops, originally an earlier Moorish qasbah, was captured in 1297 by a Castilian army.

The last bishop-lord, known as the "mason-bishop", built a neighborhood below the level of the old town in a Neo-Classical style, before renouncing the temporal lordship.

During the Spanish Civil War, the Francoist Civil Guard fortified the upper castle, while the Republican forces took to the lower cathedral.

A Jewish community once existed in Sigüenza from 1124-1492 (1124 was the first written documentation, but the presence of Jews most likely already existed). Cardinal Jiménez de Cisneros learned Hebrew during his stay in Sigüenza.

UNIVERSITY: By a bull of Innocent VIII in 1489, the university was created, with powers to confer the degrees of bachelor, licentiate and doctor; the initial college was thus transformed into a university.

A bull issued by Pope Paul III extended the course in theology, and during the rectorate of Maestro Velosillo the chairs of physics were created, while a bull of Pope Julius II established the faculties of secular law and of medicine. (Source: Wikipedia)

Es de estilo renacentista y forma parte de la Plaza Mayor de Sigüenza, en su interior se encuentran algunos de los servicios municipales.

El emplazamiento de la antigua Segontia (que significa "dominando el valle") de los arévacos celtíberos, hoy llamada Villavieja ('ciudad vieja'), se encuentra a media legua de la actual Sigüenza.

El historiador romano Tito Livio menciona la ciudad en su análisis de las guerras de Catón el Viejo con los celtíberos.

La ciudad cayó bajo dominio romano, visigodo, árabe y castellano.

Hacia 1123 fue tomada por Bernardo de Agen, su primer obispo.

Sigüenza desempeñó un papel importante en las guerras civiles de los siglos XIII y XIV.

El palacio-fortaleza de los obispos, originalmente una antigua alcazaba árabe, fue tomado en 1297 por un ejército castellano.

En Sigüenza existió una comunidad judía entre 1124 y 1492 (1124 es el primer registro escrito, pero es probable que la presencia de judíos ya existiera). El cardenal Jiménez de Cisneros aprendió hebreo durante su estancia en Sigüenza.

UNIVERSIDAD: Mediante bula de Inocencio VIII en 1489, se creó la universidad, con facultades para otorgar los grados de bachiller, licenciado y doctor; el colegio inicial se transformó así en universidad.
