Live Oak branches with Ressurection Fern

            Live oak — so strong it can do anything and go anywhere, and it does it all standing apparently still. Here is one that resides in Audabon Park, New Orleans.

See the bark, deeply creviced and linear? — now see where it’s covered with extensive patches of curly brown “stuff”? That’s ressurection fern, often a companion of Live Oak. 

It’s an epiphite, living on air and water, anchored to the rough bark of the tree. When conditions are right, it shows as a small bright green fern, during drought, it curls up brown and crisp and seemingly dead. Hence the name. Thrilling stuff. A tree is never just a tree.
