Chalkhill Street Blues - a photo on Flickriver

            Male Chalkhill Blue (Polyommatus coridon) pauses on some baked marjoram on a hot afternoon at Aston Rowant NNR. He'd just finshed nectaring on the top and was wiggling his antenae at the lower section.

There were lots of butterflies here (relative to my midland locations) and most were in good condition - even the Meadow Browns seemed fresh. They were absolutely hyper in the hot sun, so much so at mid afternoon that it was virtually impossible to take a picture and I retreated to the village for refreshments. Upon return some little fluffy clouds had appeared and the insects had calmed down.

I'd gone in hopes of Adonis Blues but was happy enough with this boy. I also came away with aches and pains, twisted ankles and bruises. This was my first time at Aston Rowant and it is not a reserve for the lowland faint hearted. Put your camera bag down without concentrating and it is likely to tumble a long way downhill.
