158799 was built in 1991 as one of seventeen class 158 units (nos. 158798-814) built as three-car units for Trans Pennine duties. With the introduction of the class 185 fleet on these duties the three car class 158 fleet were dispersed with centre cars generally going to different operators too the rest of the unit. 158799 joined the Central Trains fleet as a two car set with its original centre car 58716 now formed as the centre vehicle in set 158752 operated by Northern.
