55008_1976_10_Kings_Cross

            55008 The Green Howards approaches journeys end at Kings Cross with 1E01, 07:55 Edinburgh - Kings Cross service, 23rd October 1976. This is the old Kings Cross prior to the electrification and resignalling (although the new Kings Cross Power Signal Box can be seen behind 55008) with the old colourlight signals, motorised disc shunt signals and “roller blind” route indicators. Signal “C” shunt signal is actually “off” with a “F1” route indication. 

Locomotive History
Built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows as D9008 it was accepted into British Railways service on the 7th July 1961 and allocated to Gateshead MPD. It was named The Green Howards at Darlington station on the 30th September 1963. It was fitted with dual train brakes in May 1968 and electric train heating in October 1971. On the 16th February 1977 whilst working 1S16, 08:00 King's Cross - Edinburgh 55008 was in collision at Darlington with a Diesel Multiple Unit, the cause being defective train brakes on 1S16. The introduction of the HST's on the East Coast main line was the death of the Deltics and 55008 was withdrawn on the last day of 1981 (due to flat batteries) and broken up at Doncaster in August 1982.
