55001_1976_08_Doncaster

A rather grey morning in the summer of 1976 with 55001 St Paddy drifting through Doncaster light engine, 28th August 1976.

Locomotive History
On the 16th January 1961 D9001 ran light engine from Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, to Doncaster Works and was exhibited at Stratford the following day. It was formally accepted into British Railways service on the 23rd February 1961 and allocated Finsbury Park MPD. It was named St Paddy without ceremony during a visit to Doncaster works in July 1961. It was dual brake fitted, painted corporate blue and electric train heating fitted during classified repairs at Doncaster works in March 1968, July 1969 and March 1971 respectively. On the 24th March 1978 whilst working 1S16, 08:00 Kings Cross Edinburgh 55001 suffered an engine failure and was removed at Doncaster and tripped over to Doncaster works for repair. However repairs were not immediately sanctioned and the locomotive started to be robbed for spares and its general condition worsened over the next eighteen months. By October 1979 there were three Deltic long term residents of Doncaster works (55001/04/20) all having been out of service for well over a year and repairs were finally sanctioned with 55004 being released to traffic on the 29th November 1979. However the high cost of repairing 55004 lead to the decision not to repair 55001 and 55020 and both were withdrawn in January 1980, the first of the class to be withdrawn. It was quickly broken up at Doncaster works during February 1980. My thanks to www.napier-chronicles.co.uk for some of the above information.
