Locomotive History
D345 was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton le Willows, entering service on 17th May 1961. D345 introduced the final variation of nose design for the class which was fitted to the remaining locomotives to be built. This featuring a central four-digit headcode and no gangway doors which gives a much neater appearance. D345 was one of four locomotives (D345 - D348) allocated to Neville Hill for Leeds – Edinburgh duties including the 'Queen of Scots Pullman to replace Pacific steam power. Subsequent transfers saw spells at York (January 1963), Healey Mills (January 1967), Gateshead (October 1969), Healey Mills (February 1976), Gateshead (October 1976), Haymarket (March 1978) and finally Longsight (May 1978). Re-numbered 40145 under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme it was one of the last four Class 40’s to receive a classified repair at Crewe Works and was released to traffic in November 1980. It was withdrawn on 10th June 1983 after sustaining derailment damage in Stourton Yard, Leeds. Following withdrawal 40145 was purchased for preservation and delivered to East Lancashire Railway at Bury in February 1984, the first class 40 to enter preservation. Since entering preservation 40145 has been a consistent and reliable locomotive and in October 2002 was certified for use on Network Rail.
