            As you can see by the shadows this shot is taken more or less straight into the mid-day sun on a cloudless Spring Bank Holiday Monday, 29th May 1978. After a few attempts with todays technology I have decided this black and white version of the original Kodak Ektachrome 200 transparency is the best I can achieve.

Locomotive History
55022 is in actual fact the first of the production batch of Deltics and entered traffic as D9000 on the 28th February 1961. Allocated to Haymarket it was initially based at Leith Central as Haymarket was being rebuilt and arrived at Leith for crew training following acceptance trials on the 22nd March 1961. It was fitted with its Royal Scots Grey nameplates at Glasgow St Rollox Works on the 14th June 1962. Four days later on the 18th June 1962 (the start of the new summer timetable) British Railways introduced the full Deltic diagrammed timetable. The date also coincided with the centenary of "The Flying Scotsman" service and D9020 "Nimbus" was specially prepared by Finsbury Park to haul the centenary Down Flying Scotsman whilst Haymarket prepared D9000 for the up service. D9000 was also officially named during a ceremony at Edinburgh Waverley, performed by Brigadier J.E. Swetenham D.S.O., Colonel of The Royal Scots Greys, prior to departure. It received dual brake equipment during a classified repair (General) at Doncaster Works in October/November 1967 and was outshopped in corporate blue. It was fitted with electric train heating equipment during a classified repair (Intermediate) at Doncaster Works in October 1971. At the beginning of October 1981 55022 was selected and prepared for farewell railtour duties which it carried out until withdrawn on the 3rd January 1982. Following withdrawal it was sold for preservation for £14,900 and is currently based on the East Lancshire Railway
